I had the idea to use “sticks and stones” as a chorus for about a year before recording We All Fall Down, but I didn’t know that it would find it’s home in this song. I had been kinda stuck with writing lyrics for it—the song was pretty far along, and I was struggling with managing everyone’s different societal expectations a year and a half into the pandemic in the post-vax delta phase. After I realized the chorus fit well, it became very natural to piece together “ring around the rosie” into the verses (which some people think refers to earlier plagues). I was pleased at how the delivery turned out, it gives the lyrics a different feeling and meaning, perhaps that we all make mistakes and are only human as we struggle through this weird life together. Thanks to Gabe Katz’ drumming and Asher Katz’ keyboards (no relation!), the final musical details came together easily towards the end.
